Was the Moon Landing a Hoax?

Americans love a conspiracy. A government agency doing its job is just plain boring, even if it is doing something extraordinary, like sending a man to the moon. But maybe sending a man to the moon is a little too extraordinary. How do we know for sure it really happened? What if it were all a hoax?

Now that's something to get excited about!

Conspiracy theorists can seem pretty convincing if you don't have all the facts--but what are the facts? It sounds crazy to believe the moon landing was a hoax--or does it? How do you evaluate online sources that seem wildly opposed to one another? Check out the following sources and do an evaluation of your own:

  1. the website www.ufos-aliens.co.uk/cosmiapollo.html looked very unprofessional. It had some horrible graphics that you could not see clearly. The website seemed to be geared towards uneducated people. Anyone can make a website and voice their opinions. This makes the internet not the greatest place to look for information. This website seems to me that it was just made by someone who has a lot of free time on thier hands.

  2. I did the first site on the Moon landing not faked. I did not think it was a real site because the facts are things we already know and it was just an argument back and forth between someone that thought it was faked and a person who thought it was not. The things the person said were sort of lame and i could tell they were not professionals.

  3. I believe that we did land on the moon. I feel like somebody that worked for NASA would have come out and the cat would've been out of the bag a long time ago. I am one to believe what I am told though. Sometimes when we believe something for so long it's hard to be told that it isn't real. I would like to think that isn't me, but sometimes it is. I believe scientists before I believe random people that think they know everything.

  4. I do believe that we landed on the moon. I was tasked with the first link and it was full of information. However, I do not completly believe in the credability of the information nor the credibility of the site. Most of the videos I watched on the site were so grainy and old that it was hard to find what the author was talking about. Given where we are now in space and technology, I would find it hard to believe that we did not get to the moon. The site was still fun to read and a good joke at best.

  5. The site that i went over in class had some good points when it justified the landing being real. It supported itself with fact and examples, as well as pictures. The author of the site put a lot of opinions on the website which took away from the strength of his website in some ways. The links that were posted worked and helped also.

  6. I did the ufos-aliens site which claimed the moon landing was faked. At first I thought the web site was cheesy and unprofessional(there were grammatical errors!) but the facts were fairly convincing. Unfortunately there wasn't a works cited and the credentials of the author were not listed. Overall it was worded well but unconvincing.

  7. On the website that I looked at the information all seemed to be purely opinion, but a lot of the information was very persuasive and really makes me think that it did actually happen. In my own beliefs, I do think it happened, because there is too much information about it in the country for it to not be true. Back when we did land on the moon, we probably didn't have the technology to make up the images if it wasn't true. I don't know, this is just my opinion.

  8. Based on the article that i reviewed i think that the moon landing was not faked. It presented some very convincing evidence and had some good points. The site was also laid out very professionally as compared to some of the others. The links at the bottom of the site were also very informative and seemed accurate.

  9. I believe that the moon landing was not a hoax and so going into this assignment I tried to keep an open mind. I still came out believing that the moon landing was true. The websites were very information either way you went. (hoax or not). The websites that I believe to be great sources really have poorer lay-outs than I assumed they would be. Boo on some of the government sites.

  10. Some of you didn't specify which sites you were talking about--makes it hard to follow your opinion.

I was a little kid during that first moon landing. It was summertime and my sisters and friends and I were outside rollerskating when my mom yelled at us to come inside and see the astronauts on TV. We skated as fast as we could down the street so we could see the images being broadcast from the moon. The images weren't too exciting, actually, but the idea that there were actually people on the moon at that moment was amazing. It's hard for me to believe that it was all just a hoax, mainly because so many people were involved with the project. How would you keep all those people either ignorant or quiet? The idea of a hoax is certainly interesting though and plays to the fact that we depend on language and images to construct our reality. After all, I have no personal proof that anyone went to the moon because I wasn't on board the ship; I just have the words and images of other people. Has anyone seen Jim Carey in The Truman Show? That movie played on a similar theme--it took an entire film production company, complete with stage sets and actors to convince one guy that his world was real--and it was all a hoax; all the "facts" of his life were a hoax.

  11. When I lived at home, National Geographic was the only magazine that my parents subscribed to. I used to spend hours reading the articles and looking at the pictures while also,day-dreaming about the day that I would visit some far-off place. It just seemed natural to choose an article from this magazine to evaluate.

Like many of my classmates who have already responded to this blog, I too believe that we did indeed visit the moon in 1969. I think that this experience has allowed our space program to flourish and has contributed to our ability to be part of today's International Space Station Program. Do I personally have proof that man has walked on the moon? No, but I have never felt like I needed more evidence than that provided by the media.

Are there people out there who conspire to cover up the truth? Yes. Politicians, businessmen, and even family members are sometimes less than honest. But if we tried to scrutanize everything we encountered in our daily life, we wouldn't have any time left to enjoy it.
